Meet the Team #2 – Scott Darling

Our next Meet the Talisman Team introduces us to the apprentice – Scott Darling, Tool Room Engineer.

Scott joined the team in November 2017 and following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, carved his way into engineering, joining Talisman’s apprenticeship program via his local college, Heart of Worcestershire.

“My dad and my grandad both have had careers in engineering and it always felt like the right step for me. When I completed my GCSEs at school, I was a bit unsure on the path I wanted to take – I was keen on engineering, but not sure on the specialism. I did a brief stint on an electrician’s course and went to Hereford College of Arts, but when I was given an opportunity with Talisman, I was keen to get stuck in,” Scott says.

Scott is usually found in the tool room working across a variety of machines used to innovate Talisman products. A recent product Scott helped to develop which has created efficiencies on the shop floor was an air blasting block, that releases moulded plastic from the injection moulding tool as it completes the process.

Scott said: “I was really hyped to join Talisman and start my apprenticeship. I enjoy working on the CNC lathe and manual mills, and I’ve developed lots of practical skills. Going forward I’d like to learn more about using the Hurco machine and latest injection moulding machines and develop my knowledge of CAD.”

Scott is currently working through his Level 3 City and Guilds in Engineering and during his 3 years at Talisman has even learnt how to take the controls of a forklift trucks and cranes. But it’s seeing his hard work in the tool preparation room with colleagues Dave and Martin that is the most rewarding part of his role, he says: “Seeing the tool on the machine forming some of the innovative parts and projects that we make, having contributed to that process, it’s really motivating and I’m really keen to continue developing my skills throughout my apprenticeship.”
